My Work Experience in Patent Law


I registered with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office as a patent attorney.  have about six years full-time equivalent drafting and/or prosecuting patent applications.  I have an M.S. in computer science (3.87 G.P.A.) from Portland State University (2003).  

Although my technical degree is in computer science, I enjoy learning about new technologies and have worked with a variety of different types of inventions.  You can click a link below to see a patent writing sample.

I am now enjoying having my own solo practice.  Below is some of my experience in patent law.

Constellation Law Group PLLC (7/2010 to Present).  

Work as independent contractor representing clients of Constellation Law Group, including Intellectual Ventures.

Law Office of Jose R. Mata, Patent Attorney (1/2010 to Present)
I am working exclusively in patent law, including drafting and filing patent applications, responding to patent application rejections by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, and offering advice on a variety of patent law areas.  I am providing most of my services for a flat fee that is negotiated at the beginning of a project. 

Blakely Sokoloff Taylor & Zaffman (4/2006 to 4/2007)
As an associate patent attorney, I drafted patent applications and responses to rejections for the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.  I worked with a wide variety of technologies, including electrical circuits, computer hardware and software, Internet traffic routing, databases, telecommunications, and mechanical devices. 

Fields IP PS (Contract attorney 11/2003 to 2/2004, Associate attorney 4/2004 to 12/2004)
I prepared drafts of patent applications for high technology clients.  I helped prepare patent applications related to mechanical devices, field programmable gate arrays, and submicron semiconductor device design and fabrication.

Klarquist Sparkman LLP (Contract attorney 7/1999 to 6/2000, Associate attorney 7/2000 to 8/2001)
I primarily provided patent litigation support.  Areas of technology included computer hardware and software, peripheral computer devices, automated memory testing (e.g., BIST), artificial intelligence and distributed operating systems.​
